2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA

The 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA is a limited-production, track-focused version of the WRX STI, built to celebrate Subaru’s record-setting Nürburgring lap and to serve as the most performance-oriented variant of the model offered in the United States that year. Only 500 units were produced for the U.S. market, making it a rare and collectible model.

Visually, the Type RA stands out with its lightweight, motorsport-inspired components. At the front, it features a more aggressive bumper design with large air intakes and Subaru’s signature hexagonal grille, accented by a red STI badge. The hood scoop remains functional, feeding air to the intercooler, and the hood itself is made from aluminum to save weight. The roof panel is made of carbon fiber, lowering the car’s center of gravity and reducing overall mass.

The side profile is enhanced by lightweight 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels finished in gold, wrapped in high-performance tires. Red-finished Brembo brake calipers and cross-drilled rotors are visible behind the wheels, signaling upgraded braking performance. The side mirrors are finished in a contrasting color, and subtle Type RA badging identifies its special-edition status.

At the rear, the Type RA features a large carbon-fiber rear wing for improved downforce, C-shaped LED taillights, and quad exhaust outlets integrated into a black lower diffuser. The trunk lid is aluminum, further contributing to weight reduction.

Inside, the cabin is a blend of performance and refinement. Recaro front sport seats with Ultrasuede inserts and red bolsters provide strong lateral support. The flat-bottomed STI steering wheel is wrapped in Ultrasuede with red contrast stitching, and the instrument cluster features unique STI performance displays. A numbered plaque on the center console identifies each car’s production number. Carbon-fiber trim accents and red seatbelts emphasize the car’s racing inspiration.

Under the hood, the 2018 WRX STI Type RA uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine producing 310 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque—slightly more than the standard STI, thanks to revised ECU tuning, a higher-flow exhaust, and a cold air intake. Power is delivered through a six-speed manual transmission with a revised third gear ratio for improved acceleration. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) is standard, allowing the driver to adjust torque distribution.

Performance upgrades include Bilstein dampers, a revised suspension setup for sharper handling, and reduced overall weight compared to the standard STI. The car is tuned for track-capable precision while remaining road legal, with stopping power provided by the upgraded Brembo braking system.
